ADOPTION APPLICATION

As part of our protocol to match our dogs with the perfect family for them, we need to get some general information about you and your family.

Applicants often ask how long it will take to adopt a dog. That can sometimes be a difficult question to answer.  Often, we have approved adopters waiting in the wings, or because of social media, we may get inundated with new applications.  We ask for your patience and understanding so our volunteers can process applications, evaluate dogs, conduct phone interviews, and arrange home visits.  This can sometimes take time and is a matter of matching the right dog for the right family. This does not reflect negatively on any one applicant. We look forward to learning more about you!

Before you begin filling out an application, please understand that a majority of our dogs are rescued with partners in the South, and are long-distance adoptions via transport from other states. Our dogs are also fostered in Northern homes, especially puppies. As part of the application, please indicate whether or not you would be interested in a direct adoption. This will help our volunteers process your application appropriately.

The more thorough and detailed you are in completing your application, the more readily our team can proceed in the process. Thank you for taking care to thoughtfully respond to the questions outlined below.

All fields are required. If a field does not apply to you, please complete with “N/A”.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Fill Out Adoption Application!

The first step is to fill out the adoption application. Be sure to answer each question with as much detail as possible. The more you tell us about you and your lifestyle the easier it will be for us to process your application.

Our adoption team will review your application and determine if it meets our requirements to adopt. One of our adoption coordinators will reach out to you via email to set up a phone interview. Please check your Spam folder in case our email ends up there.

During the phone interview, our coordinator will explain what happens next. We will ask to conduct a home visit or a virtual visit.

Please understand that all our adoption coordinators are volunteers, which may mean a short lag time before you are contacted.

APPLICANTS SHOULD…

  1. Be able to provide proper care, exercise, and training for the lifetime of a dog. Keep in mind this could be a 10-plus year commitment.

  2. Be at least 25 years old.

  3. Have no children in the household under age five.

  4. Be able to provide exercise, socialization, and companionship. Each dog is unique in what they will need. Family time away from home during the day will help determine what age, breed, and temperament will fit into your home. Young pups need someone home more often. Long hours in a crate are not acceptable.

  5. Do not contain pets in outdoor pens or overhead runs.

  6. Keep all dogs on a leash when outdoors unless they are in a secure fenced area. Dogs should never be left outside alone.

Fees

Adoption fees will cover transportation costs, vetting, heartworm testing, and treatment if needed. All adoptable pups and dogs will be up-to-date on age-appropriate vaccines and will be altered if age permits. Fees could vary depending on what is included with each dog.
